Farragut was a small town in eastern Tennessee when it was hit by a tornado on April 15, 1865. The tornado destroyed most of the town and killed at least 36 people. Farragut is now a ghost town that is only accessible during special events such as the Farragut reunion or museum tour. The town of Farragut was founded in 1802 by John Cavanaugh and his wife Mary Pope. The first post office in the community was established in 1810. In 1861, General David Hunter decided to move the Military Academy from Lexington, Kentucky to Nashville, Tennessee because he felt that Farragut would not be able to support it. Farragut had one school until 1906 when it reopened as the Eastern Tennessee Normal School. After World War II, many businesses closed due to lack of business opportunities. However, some people started up businesses again including a grocery store and restaurant which still operate today. In 1971, the Eastern Tennessee State University opened its doors for students in nearby Lewisville and renamed itself Vanderbilt University after Dr. James Avila who served as president of ETSU from 1951-1965 and helped bring about changes at ETSU which included opening its own library which became one of the largest public libraries in the Southeast region then knownvironnmentally In 2002-2003, renovations were made to Farragut's Library which has since been named "The Richard Kildall Center for Appalachian Studies". The renovation also added new exhibits on local history and culture as well as adding an outdoor amphitheater where concerts are typically held throughout summertime
