Farragut, Tennessee is a town of about 50,000 people in the extreme southeast corner of the state of Tennessee. It is located about 30 miles north-northwest of Nashville and 20 miles east-northeast of Chattanooga. The area was first settled by Scots-Irish immigrants in the late 18th century, and became a center for gun trade and smuggling during the American Civil War. Farragut was also one of the few Union strongholds in southeastern Tennessee after Confederate General Robert E. Lee's invasion failed to take it by force. In 1865, Farragut was burned to the ground by Confederates as part of their strategic campaign to reduce Confederate arsenals and munitions caches throughout Southeast Tennessee. Since then, Farragut has undergone some significant changes - including incorporation as a city in 1974 and its current status as a rural community with a population higher than 50,000. In 1935, Winchester Incorporated merged with Browning Firearms Corporation to form Browning-Marlin Firearms Corporation.

Farragut was founded by General James Wilkinson in 1796 as a small log settlement on the then- unsettled lands between Memphis and Nashville. In 1815, Wilkinson named it after Commodore John Farragut, who had been killed during the Mexican–American War and whose body was found near Mobile Bay. The town grew rapidly throughout the 19th century due to its strategic location along the Cumberland River, which made it an important transportation hub for goods necessary for southern textile mills and other businesses. By 1900, Farragut had developed into a major cotton town with over 100 cotton plantations and 1,500 workers; it also boasted a large public library and several dozen stores. However, during World War I (1914–18), many of these operations were shut down due to restrictions placed on exports by America's entry into warring parties; however, they reopened shortly afterward under wartime conditions that allowed larger production facilities to be built within Tennessee's borders. In 1945 – following World War II – Farragut became one of the first cities in Tennessee to become racially integrated when all black residents were forced out of white neighborhoods in order to create integrated neighborhoods called "The New South". In recent years, Farragut has experienced rapid growth as a bedroom community for Memphis; however its downtown core remains largely undeveloped despite numerous attempts by developers to bring development there including one led by entrepreneur Tishomingo Odom that attempted unsuccessfully to construct a mixed-use skyscraper overlooking Interstate 40 from across Riverside Park Avenue until federal prosecutors destroyed his project following charges of bribery and conspiracy against state elected officials. Despite this stability and progressivism relative to most other parts of Greater Memphis – where gentrification has taken place with increasing frequency – efforts have been ongoing among some residents of neighboring Shelby County (to secede from Metro) over concerns about demographic change within their own city while preserving traditional values such as segregationist politics more generally within Memphis metropolitan government overall.

In 1840, he donated land to establish what would become Farragut Naval Air Station (FNAS). The USS Constitution Museum & Highland Park contains artifacts from both USS Constitution (1798) and USS Enterprise (1864), two of the vessels that sailed under Captains Farragut and Commodore David Porter during the War of 1812
