Farragut, TN is a town located in McMinn County, Tennessee. The population was 901 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Knoxville metropolitan area. In 1862, General George Gordon Granger arrived in Farragut with his army to take over command of Union forces operating in northern Tennessee. He ordered the construction of two military hospitals which would be used by both Union and Confederate troops during the war. On December 12, 1862, Confederate General Robert Ewell arrived at Farragut with an invasion force numbering several thousand men. Ewell ordered Major John Seddon to open fire on any Union soldiers who attempted to leave their encampment for fear they would surrender. This action resulted in dozens of deaths and many injuries among both sides. The Army Hospital was completed in 1865 and became known as "Granger's Hospital". It remained operational until 1971 when it was decommissioned due to budget cuts within the US military. The Army Hospital building still stands today and is used as a museum by the Knoxville Museum of Art. In 2008, a new $21 million Veterans Affairs hospital was built adjacent to "Granger's Hospital" and named after Admiral Samuel Eliot Morison – one of America's most accomplished naval officers during World War II and later head of NATO’s Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Force (SHAEF).
