Farragut was a small town in Tennessee, located on the Cumberland River. The first post office at Farragut was established in 1836. It closed in 1841. The town was founded by Nicholas Farragut and his family, who came from what is now Vermont in 1796. They built a log cabin on the banks of the Cumberland River, which served as their home for many years. In 1811, Nicholas Farragut married Martha Jones and they moved to Nashville to start a new life. In 1840, John Sevier became the 3rd Governor of Tennessee and he enlarged and improved the present courthouse in downtown Farragut. In 1861, Confederate General Robert Ewell founded what is now West Point Academy there after retreating from Petersburg during the Peninsula Campaign. After Union General George Meade's success at Gettysburg, Farragut again experienced prosperity with waves of tourists flooding into its streets for tourism reasons during Reconstruction time (1870-1910). However, World War II brought much destruction to the town; both fire bombings and bombing raids by Japanese forces destroyed most of its buildings between 1941-1945 including several churches which were rebuilt using salvaged materials from other towns destroyed by Japan during this time period. After that war ended things slowly began to improve as businesses reopened and more people returned to live there; however, some stability has not been achieved since then due to changing social demographics throughout Tennessee over that time period as well as recent economic recession conditions statewide
