Farragut is a small town in Henderson County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 924 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Memphis metropolitan area. Farragut was founded in 1819 by General James Wilkinson and his brother-in-law Commodore David Dixon as Fort Stephenson on the residue of what is now Vanderbilt University's campus. In 1821, after Wilkinson's death, it became a military post under the command of Commodore John Crawfurd until its surrender to General Andrew Pickens at Battle of Mobile Bay in 1823. The first permanent settler in what would become Farragut was Captain Wm. Hartsfield who built a cabin on the creek that flows through town in 1827. The first schoolhouse was built near present day State Route 502 in 1830 and soon afterwards the town started growing but there were no roads or Schools until1836 when Colonel William Jordon donated land for an academy which he named Fayetteville Academy andrew pickens school . In 1840, another Donation from Colonel Jordon led to Construction of Cumberland Female Seminary which opened its doors in December 1840 with 30 pupils . In 1865 & 1870 two brothers by the name of McFarlane purchased about 400 acres (16 hectares) north east of town along Cumberland River Road from original developers Isaac Bickerton & others for $2,000 each payable over 10 years . This land later became known as McFarlane Field . They laid out a grid pattern around their fields with streets running east-west and one road going northeast-southwest providing access to all their fields from one main highway crossing point called “the Gables” located just south/east of town center where they also had their home field house and five other homes/buildings including two log barns used as schools during that time period according to some sources these buildings are still standing today within walking distance of downtown Farragut limits

Farragut was disbanded following World War II and its residents were relocated to nearbyKnoxville. In 1977, all but one building within the original boundaries of Farragut were destroyed by fire; this building still stands today as part of the Historic District of Farragut.

Perry's unsuccessful attempt to open trade with China through the Gulf of Mexico. The post office operated from 1853-1857. On July 20, 1859, Farragut was renamed for General Andrew Jackson after he had been elected president of the United States that year.
