Farragut was a small town in Williamson County, Tennessee, about 20 miles north of the city of Knoxville. It was founded by Captain John Farragut and his family in 1801 as a trading post on the Cumberland River. The post became an important center for fur trade and transportation during the early 19th century. In 1806, Captain Farragut purchased land at what is now Fairview Village and began to build a stone lighthouse. He named it Fort Farragut after himself. The first keeper of the lighthouse was Samuel Henson, who served from 1807 to 1812. From 1814 to 1830,Captain Nathaniel Biddle served as the second keeper of Fort Farragut. In 1830, Captain Gouverneur Morris took over as the third keeper of Fort Farragut. From 1840 until 1862, Commodore David Dixon commanded Fort Farragut. During this time period, Fort Farragut played an important role in Confederate efforts to block Union river shipments into Chattanooga and other ports in eastern Tennessee. After the Civil War ended,Fort Farragut fell into disrepair and was abandoned by its last occupant in 1865.
