Gallatin, Tennessee is a small town in Hardin County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,829 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Hardin County. By 1810, there were about 60 people living in Gallatin. The town began to grow rapidly because of its location and its access to water resources. By 1830, there were over 200 residents in Gallatin. In 1836, Knoxville became the capital of Tennessee and Gallatin became a part of that city. However, most of the people in both towns continued to live near each other until after World War II whenatta development increased demand for housing within walking distance of any major city center made it difficult for many people to commute to work or continue living close by while they built new homes.
