These settlers include Isaac McCoy and his wife Martha Ann DeckerMcCoy; James Aiken; Abram Weems; Solomon Gregg; David Rankin; Daniel Goodwin; Elijah Rankin; James Smith (alias Jim); Thomas Jourdan (alias Tom); George Witherspoon (alias Geo). Over time,gallatin grew into a small town with a population of around 10,000 people today. Its economy depends on agriculture, retail trade, transportation services and local government services such as police and fire protection. The biggest employer in town is Chik-fil-a located within walking distance of most residents' homes. Other major employers include First National Bank, United Airlines/Air America Company Storefronts at IHOP restaurants, FedEx Ground Services store fronts near Walmart stores etc.. The primary cultural institutions in town are two churches: Our Lady Of Lourdes Catholic Church which dates back to 1855 and St Joseph's Episcopal Church which opened its doors in 1865 . Gallatin is a town in Sullivan County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. Gallatin is located on the Cumberland River and about 18 miles (30 km) west of Nashville. It is named after General Alexander Hamilton, an American Founding Father who served as the first U.S. Secretary of War and later became one of the most influential figures in history. The area that now forms Gallatin was part of what is now Carter County when it was organized in 1797 from parts of Knox and Rutherford Counties. A post office called Gallatin was established in 1819, and remained in operation until 1865. The town site was chosen by surveyors for its strategic location overlooking both the river valley to the south and downtown Nashville to the north; it also had easy access to transportation links with Nashville and other nearby settlements. In 1823, James Kenedy founded an oil well at what is now Gallatin Falls below present-day Kenedyville on upper Cumberland River; this well proved successful and began production around 1830. By 1840, some five hundred people lived in Gallatin; by 1860, its population had reached 2,500 residents. In 1861–1865, during the Civil War, Union troops besieged Confederate forces at Fort Donelson within sight ofgallatin but were unable to take it because of wet weather conditions and lack of artillery fire from nearby Hillsboro Heights battery commanded by General Nathan Bedford Forrest (later President Woodrow Wilson). Today's gallatin economy largely depends upon agricultural products such as haymaking and cotton ginning which are produced near Highway 58 between Clarksville and Lebanon; manufacturing activities include construction materials such as lumber or hardware store items; small businesses provide services such as grocery stores or gas stations
