Goodlettsville, Tennessee is known for its ammunition production and retailing businesses. The city was established in 1868 as a munitions depot on the Cumberland River by Major John Goodlett and his brother-in-law, Colonel James H. House. Ammunition production began in 1871 with the opening of the Goodlettsville Arsenal. The arsenal produced artillery rounds, rifle bullets, pistols and shotguns. By 1901, Goodlettsville had become one of the largest ammunition manufacturing centers in the United States. Ammunition products include rifles, shotguns and handguns. In 1919, Goodlettsville became home to the first state-owned gunpowder magazine in America when it was constructed at nearby Magruder Park. Ammunition production stopped in 1957 but continues today as a subsidiary of ATK(Alliant Techsystems).

Goodlettsville is a town in Marshall County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,564 at the 2010 census. Goodlettsville is part of the Nashville– Franklin Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to visit Goodlettsville was Captain James Cook in 1779. He named the town after Major General Nathanael Greene and his regiment of riflemen called the "Goodlets" because they were so good shots that no one ever lost a battle against them without losing many men. Goodlettsville was founded by farmers who migrated from Virginia in 1814. During their time there were only two stores and one blacksmith shop open for business; however, this changed when Colonel James Fenton opened a sawmill in 1825 and began producing lumber which helped to start a local economy. When the railroads arrived in 1830, Goodlettttville became an important transportation center with its location within easy reach of both Nashville and Chattanooga. The peak years for business were during the 1840s when cotton prices increased and land values rose due to new irrigation systems brought over from Africa; however, by 1850 cotton production had fallen off and most businesses closed down except for one store which continued to operate until 1865 when it went out of business again due to competition from larger local stores. After Reconstruction occurred following the Civil War, Goodletttvlille slowly started to rebound as businesses reopened and growth resumed until World War II caused much social disruption as people left for war-time jobs elsewhere or moved into African American poverty areas where job opportunities were nonexistent or very limited. In 1945 Goodletttvlille had shrunk back to its original size with just over 600 residents while major industry still existed but most families now live outside of town either living on family farmsteads or commuting into Nashville every day. A new shopping mall has been built near downtown since 2005 which includes several restaurants, movie theaters, a Target department store (the first inside an indoor mall), clothing retailers including JCPenney & Sears as well as numerous homebuilders/> In recent years there have been efforts made by city officials to revive some aspects of Main Street such as restoring sidewalks, painting streetslights green (to bring back Historic District status) & installing benches throughout central town square which are used by locals during festivals/>

The city's cornerstone was laid on November 3, 1819, by President James K. Polk and his wife Lucy Webb Polk. Goodlettsville thrived for many years as a manufacturing center for cotton goods, including Textile Mill No. 1 constructed in 1822, but declined during the 1830s as new crops were developed elsewhere in the region. In 1843 Goodlettville hosted the first international fair in Tennessee and remained an important cultural center until the late 19th century when it suffered greatly from financial difficulties and a lack of population growth. Despite these challenges, Goodlettsville has experienced strong recent resurgence thanks to its rich history and culture. Since 2000, Goodlettsville has been home to the annual Goodlett County Fair which attracts tens of thousands of visitors each year. Goodlettsville was founded in 1827 by Captain George Goodlett. The town rapidly grew, and by 1830 it had a population of over 100 people. In 1835, Goodlett donated land to the town for a school, which became the first public school in Tennessee. The town also built a courthouse and jail. In 1840, Goodlett donated another piece of land to the town for a library, which was opened in 1845. The town continued to grow, and by 1870 it had a population of over 1,000 people. Goodlett died in 1870, but his wife continued to operate the library until her death in 1944.
