In 1865, Goodlettsville was founded by Captain John Goodlett, a United States Army officer. The town was named for General James H. Goodlett who had served in the American Civil War and as Commandant of the Tennessee Volunteers. In 1886, Captain Goodlett's son, Major General John H. Goodlett, moved to Goodlettsville from Chattanooga to take over command of the United States Cavalry Troops stationed there. Goodlettsville developed into a small farming community with several stores and a post office. By 1910, it had an elementary school and two churches; oneMethodist and one Presbyterian. In 1916, the first automobile dealership opened inGoodlettsville when Harry Wartenberg leased an old car dealership on State Route 7A. The Second World War interrupted development at this time though some heavy bombing occurred nearby during the war which caused some damage but no loss of life or businesses . After the war ended in 1945, goodlettsville slowly began to grow again with new housing developments being built along State Route 7A and Interstate 45

The first house built in Goodlettsville was a log cabin called "The Gables." The population of Goodlettsville was only 10 people when it was founded. By 1828, Goodlettsville had become a small village with a few homes and a store. In 1829, good land became available for farming and the village began to grow. One of the first businesses in Goodlettville was a sawmill that operated from 1829 to 1840. During this time, the town developed into an agricultural center with crops such as cotton, corn, and wheat being produced. In 1853, two brothers named Jesse and John Campbell built the first frame building in Goodlettsville. This building served as the town's courthouse until 1909 when it was replaced by the current courthouse which is located on Highway 56 near Old Main Street. In 1865, Wm Hays established what is now known as Hays Drug Store in Goodlettsville. This business served as one of the town's main sources of income until it closed down around 1990s. Goodlettsvillians experienced some significant growth during World War II with soldiers coming to stay during their deployment across country or staying longer if they found themselves within easy driving distance of home (such as via military roadways). Many families also chose to join The Great Migration towards Northern America during this time period – making GoodlettsVILLE one of its most rapidly growing areas post-war years! Today there are over 1,000 residents living inGoodlettstown including many retirees who have come here since 1970 – making this community one of Tennessee’s oldest continuous communities!
