Goodlettsville is a small town in Davidson County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 5,828 at the 2010 census. Goodlettsville is part of the Nashville metropolitan area. The first known inhabitants of Goodlettsville were the Yamasee people who lived on the eastern edge of Tennessee before moving to present-day Evansville, Indiana in 1813. When Colonel James Robertson moved his headquarters from Nashville to Goodlettsville in 1817 as part of a general offensive against General Andrew Jackson's forces during the American Revolution, he named it after Captain John Goodlett, one of his aides-de-camp. The town was founded by Samuel Chapman Goodlett in 1819 and became an important center for cotton production and merchants until the postwar period when mechanization replaced human labor and industry began to decline throughout Tennessee. The last major cotton crop was harvested in 1961. There are still some small scale plantations today that produce rice, applesauce and other crops. In recognition of its contributions to Knox County during various periods following its incorporation into this county as well as its unique history within Davidson County,Goodlettsville has been designated a National Historic Landmark by the National Park Service (NPS).
