Greeneville, Tennessee is a town in Union County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 5,989 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Union County. The name "Greeneville" is said to be derived from the Cherokee word hŋa-yobi meaning "borderland." The first settler in Greeneville was Alexander McGillivray who came overland from Kentucky in 1819. He erected a log cabin on what is now Main Street in 1821. Other early settlers included John Crain and his brother James Crain. In 1827, Greeneville became part of the newly organized Knox County when it was created from parts of Hardin and Fayette Counties. Greeneville grew rapidly during the 1830s because of its strategic location at the intersection of two major wagon road routes: the Nashville and Chattanooga Railroad ran through town and led directly to Memphis; and Royal Road ran parallel to both routes and facilitated trade between Knoxville and Muscle Shoals downriver. By 1840, Greeneville had become an important center for cotton production due to its access to navigable rivers and its proximity to transportation hubs such as Chattanooga and Nashville. During World War II, Greeneville served as a vital munitions depot for Allied forces fighting in Europe. numerous factories were constructed here including: Ford Motor Company's River Rouge Plant where thousands of cars were made; DuPont's Dayton Plant where mustard gas was produced; North American Aviation's HQ which manufactured bombers/aircraft components; as well as other facilities such as a Training School for Army Air Forces pilots located on Redstone Arsenal Boulevard near US Highway 11 (the present day Baldwinsboro Pike). In 1951, Greenevillo received city status after being approved by Tennessee voters via referendum passed with nearly 60% support%. A year later, in 1952, the city added water supplies while also completing construction of municipal buildings including a library/ auditorium/ fire hall/ wastewater plant which replaced an existing farmhouse used by farmers until that time. At this time also came the addition of several new businessesincluding a post office (opened March 1st 1954), police department (opening October 1st 1954)and hospital (January 14th 1957). In 1961 residents voted overwhelmingly to annex neighboring unincorporated communities of Beechwood Village into their city Limits thereby creating what is known today as Beechwood Village incorporation area eastward along I-10 from Ulysses S Grant Parkway all the way south past Garner Avenue before terminating at Hickory Grove neighborhood beyond Bluegrass Airport property line
