Greeneville is a town in Hardin County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 9,841 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Memphis metropolitan area. Greeneville was founded in 1827 as a small community on a bend in the Maury River. In 1881, entrepreneur John C. Campbell donated land to establish what became Greeneville Township and named it after his birthplace, Greenville, South Carolina. In 1923, Campbell donated an additional piece of land to the township that would become its main business district; this acreage now forms most of downtown Greeneville. By 1930, all of Hardin County had been annexed by Memphis and Greeneville Township ceased to exist; however, its name lives on through its municipally-owned library system and other civic organizations which continue to serve the town today. The first post office in Greeneville opened on December 20th, 1840; it continued until February 14th of 1865 when it was moved from present day Main Street east to Second Street due to flooding caused by floods in 1845 & 1846 On July 6th 1909 Andrew Jourdan died suddenly at home while out for groceries with his wife who went into labor during their lunch hour resulting in her death one week later from natural causes only hours after giving birth without any medical help being available
