In Greeneville, Tennessee, the first gun target was erected in 1868. The original target was a standing oak tree. In 1903, a new target was erected at the corner of Main and South Streets. That same year, the city council authorized the erection of targets out in public square. The first set of targets were made from metal cans and had a range of just 20 feet. The targets continued to be used until 1906 when they were replaced by plastic targets.

Greeneville is a town in Lenoir County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 9,452 at the 2010 census. The name of the town comes from General James Robertson's campaign slogan "Give us Greeneville" in 1819. It was originally called Williamson Station until it was renamed Greeneville in 1837 after General John Sevier's march from Chattanooga to Knoxville through the Holston Valley. The city of Knoxville annexed much of present-day Lenoir County on December 1, 1907. Greeneville has a rich history dating back to its founding as Williamson Station on July 6, 1818 by General James Robertson and his wife Anna (née McCullough). The town became known for its fertile soil and strategic location between Chattanooga and Knoxville. In 1837, when General John Sevier arrived in Greeneville with orders to retake Knoxville from rebelling Confederates under Nathan Bedford Forrest, he named the new community after himself. As Williamson Station grew into a thriving small village, other frontier traders and farmers began moving into the area and contributing their share of commerce and culture. By 1840, Greeneville had become an important stop on stagecoaches travelling between Chattanooga andKnoxville along what is now I-15 or US-412. Early residents built homes out of logs or sod while they waited for land grants that would allow them to build more permanent homes." In 1861 Confederate soldiers burned down most of Williamson Station during their unsuccessful attempt to take over the town; however some local citizens managed to rebuild much as before without assistance from the Confederacy. A few years later Union troops burned down another local cabin during an attack on rural Lenoir County by Confederate forces seeking revenge for earlier losses suffered at Battle Creek Bridgehead northwest of Greenevillo Junction on October 16th,- this time causing extensive damage throughout the village which included loss of life both locally AND nationally including that of prominent Federalist Senator Isaac Shelby who served as mayor at this time When Union general Ulysses S Grant reachedLenoir Counties early in 1865 he found evidence that many local men had sided with rebel forces against him instead of joining him in fighting against Southern slavery - such as through providing arms or shelter to Confederate sympathizers operating within Lenoir County - resulting in significant military losses for Union forces throughout Tennessee during those critical months leading up to battle at Chickamauga River near Greensboro On September 15th 1865 several hundred rebels surrendered unconditionally at Corydon following a two week long siege led by Confederate general Braxton Bragg eastward across Alabama & Georgia Two days later Union Army cavalry entered Greenevillo Junction disabling all railroad traffic within reach & thus ending any hope any Confederate army may have had remaining outside Greeneville limits The surrender effectively ended hostilities withinLenoirCounty & left behind massive destruction including loss/damage/injury TO ALL INDIVIDUALS involved INCLUDING MANY OF THE HEROES BEST KNOWN TO MEMORY HEREIN .A total OF 30+ OFFICERS WERE KILLED AS A RESULT OF THIS EVENT .. The name "Greeneville" is derived from two early settlements in the area: One was located on the east side of Greeneville Creek, and another on land leased by Timothy Hogg from James Robertson in 1796. Growth continued until World War II when large numbers of people moved to cities or departed for other locations due to wartime mobilization. In 2000, Greeneville again experienced rapid growth with the opening of a new shopping center that increased population by nearly 50%. This expansion led to negative environmental impacts as much of this development amounted to new buildings on an already sketchy lot. As recently as 2007-2008 there were plans for yet another large shopping center adjacent to Interstate 65 – which would have resulted in even more negative impacts on nearby neighborhoods if approved – but these plans were later cancelled due to public opposition.
