In 1865, Greeneville became the capital of Cumberland County when it was created from parts of Hickman and Robertson Counties. In 1915, Greeneville become part of the new Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), which made it one of its own regions within central Tennessee. TVA operated most aspects of local government here until 1979 when it merged into federal government control as part of broader efforts to modernize all U.S.-based agencies under then-President Richard Nixon's administration
