He decided to open up some business with traders from Great Britain who were selling arms smuggling goods into Mexico City under false pretenses. Johnson needed money fast so he ordered Haggerty to turn over all his inventory of rifles, pistols, shotguns, cannons, etc., within 24 hours or face punishment from him and other government officials! Haggerty complied but made sure to keep everything hidden away until he had enough money order to cover his costs himself! It is part of the McMinnville, TN-KY-WV Metropolitan Statistical Area. Jackson is located on the Cumberland River and its downtown has been designated as a National Historic District. In 1818, Jackson was named for General Andrew Jackson who had fought in the Mexican–American War and then served as president from 1829 to 1837. The first settler in what is now Jackson was John Goodwin in 1799. He built a cabin on the banks of the Cumberland River and traded goods with Indians for land. By 1800, there were about twenty families living in Jackson. By 1830, there were over one hundred people living in Jackson alone. The first school opened inJackson on December 12th, 1830 by Reverend Andrew Brownell with twelve students enrolled. In 1827, General James Ketchum attacked Indian villages near present day Knoxville and burned down many homes and killed many people including women and children during what is known as "Ketchum's Raid." This event caused Virginian Congressman James Ketchum to demand that President James K Polk provide military support against Native American tribes such as those under Chief Red Cloud who had violated United States agreements with Mexico while raiding through Tennessee Territory Governor John Sevier appointed Hiram Bingham to survey lands east of the Cumberland River which he thought would be suitable for settlement On November 3rd, 1831 Samuel Ladd bought 2 thousand acres (8 km²) northwest ofpresent day Jacksonville from David Winnion for $4 per acre (0·86 ha) Bingham set out to build what became known as "the Great White House" which he named after George Washington . Work began on this project on October 10th, 1835 but it was not completed until May 1st, 1840 when President Martin Van Buren approved it . The original white house cost $207 000 (equivalent to $ million today). When finished it included nine rooms including an library , ballroom , formal dining room & kitchenette with ovens & stoves capable of cooking up to 600 lb (227 kg) of food . After being used by Presidents Ulysses S Grant & Rutherford B Hayes it fell into disrepair due to fire etc before finally being demolished in 1886 As cotton prices increased throughout America during the mid 19th century more people started moving intoJackson seeking jobs or opportunity There were also increasing numbers of Germans amd Irish immigrants who came here during this time period Many religious denominations established churches here such as Methodism Episcopalians Presbyterians Baptists cattolicans etcetera This led to some tension between these groups because they wanted access to same resources that others enjoyed But overall life wasn't too bad here despite some challenges
