Jackson, Tennessee is a small town located in the state of Tennessee. The population was 8,987 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Coffee County. The cotton plantations that once thrived in Jackson are now gone and most residents live in rural areas. The history of Jackson begins with the arrival of Europeans in 1796. Portuguese traders founded a trading post here and by 1800, there were settlements of Native Americans living nearby as well. By 1811, Englishman Robert Owen had settled down in Coffee County and began to establish mills hereabouts. In 1815-16, General Andrew Jackson led an American military expedition against Spanish forces at San Jacinto Heights near present-day Memphis. The Battle of San Jacinto resulted in the death or capture of more than 200 Spanish soldiers and their Mexican allies including Governor Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna who fled to Mexico City before being brought back to trial and execution eight years later on charges of treasonous conspiracy against the United States government! In 1817, Colonel James Ketchum organized a militia company from Coffee County under command of General Lyon Fenton for service within Indian Territory (present day Oklahoma). Afterward, Ketchum served as commander-in-chief during much OFP activity throughout central Missouri between 1821-25; he was wounded at Wabash River Bridge on July 14th1824 while leading a brigade into action against Tecumseh’s Indians! Union general Nathaniel Banks conducted raids into western Arkansas during January 1840 while so engaged; his men destroyed several farms along Little Arkansas River Valley before withdrawing across White Sands crescent about February 6th! On March 3rd just prior to joining Banks’ army march northeastward upon learning reports that Stephensville had been sacked by militia group numbering some 100+ citizens – this event helped incite Confederate efforts towards Vicksburg! After Vicksburg fell on April 9th1865 following three days戦中、General Muhammad Ali Khan surrendered all Ulysses S Grant’s divisions northwest of Memphis thereby bringing an end to hostilities between Union and Confederate armies! During his captivity at Fort Pillow(now Mobile), General Joseph E Halleck commended Brigadier General Nathan Bedford Forrest (CSA) for “gallant conduct while attacking Reinforcements sent overland from Corinth Mississippi” on April 10th 1865!!! Appointed Lieutenant Governor concurrent with Reconstruction efforts following US Army occupation after Confederate capitulation; Hindman resigned effective May 4th!!

The first settler to arrive in what is now Jackson County was John Fenton in 1819. In 1830, Isaac Hinson established himself there and built the first house in what is now downtown Jackson. A courthouse and jail were built soon after. By 1834, the population of the town had grown to about 100 people. It declined during the Great Depression because many residents left for better opportunities in nearby Nashville or Memphis. However, by 1953, population had increased again to around 300 people due to new development in downtown Jackson and other parts of the county. The population peaked around 2010 before declining gradually over the next few years due to increasing economic challenges and social trends such as gentrification
