Johnson City is a small town in Williamson County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 2,611 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Johnson City-Fayetteville-Montgomery Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in Johnson City were Methodist missionaries from Kentucky who arrived in 1802. They built their first log cabin on what is now Main Street. The town was founded on May 20, 1827 by John Gentry and others when they donated land for a courthouse and school district. The original post office was called Fayetteville and opened on July 1, 1830. In 1847 the community became known as Johnson City after President James K. Polk's wife Julia Boggs Johnson visited there that year while he was campaigning for the Ulysses S. Grant Presidential nomination against Andrew Jackson. The cotton gin made it possible to produce large quantities of cotton quickly in this area which led to increased trade and prosperity for the townspeople and farmers alike during the early 19th century; however, primary emphasis shifted towards agriculture during this time period as cotton production became more efficient through mechanization thanks to advances in technology such as steamboats and railroads (which began reaching Johnson City in the late 1800s). By 1900,Johnson City had about 3200 residents with a total $30 million invested including $15 million within its downtown core which included three blocks of government buildings including an opera house/theater complex (now known as Stevenson Center), two shopping malls (oneanchored by Sears Roebuck & Co.), several banks/ financial institutions, two churches (one Methodist), four schools (grades pre-K through 12), two general stores/grocery store chains (Pee Wee’s Pizza & Burger King) and six auto parts stores with over 120 employees across thirteen locations statewide; also located were two hospitals - one operated by Vanderbilt University Medical Center which closed in 2001 after thirty years providing health services to residents of Johnston city limits;and one operated by Baptist Health System Burton Hospital which operates today as Children’s Carter Hospital In recent decades much redevelopment has taken place within Downtown JohnstonCity limits centering around Steele Center shopping mall anchored by Macy’s Department Store along with numerous new restaurants/bars/cafeterias Added insult to injury have been major road projects taking up valuable blocks of development bypassing our small town entirely - most recently plans are underway for a Walmart Supercenter adjacent to SteeleCenter leaving little hope that anything will happen to improve traffic congestion near our main shopping street As well as increasing crime rates among young people living outside our downtown core like those attending nearby colleges or working downtown jobs having difficulty getting back home safely at night We need your help please
