The town of Johnson City was formed on December 12, 1851 when the land between what is now downtown Johnson City and Hendersonville was donated to the community by James Hancey and others. The first store opened in January of that year and soon there were several businesses operating within the limits of the new town. The townsite grew rapidly due to its location near two major railroads - the Nashville- Chattanooga Railroad and the Memphis & Mississippi Railroad - as well as its easy access to water supplies from Hendersonville and other nearby communities. By 1860, Johnson City had more than 100 residents and had built several churches, schools, a courthouse, a bank and many homes for themselves and their families. In 1865, Union General Ulysses S.
