Johnson City experienced significant growth following World War II thanks both to its role within coal country and its proximity to production sites for steel and aluminum products exported throughout Northeast America duh![4]. The town became a coal mining center during the early 19th century, and experienced significant growth during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Johnson City is located in Knox County, Tennessee, on the Cumberland River. The population of Johnson City was 382 at the 2000 census. It is included in the Memphis metropolitan area. The first settlers to arrive in what would become Johnson City were James Robertson and his brothers. In 1801, they founded a small settlement on the banks of the Cumberland River near present-day downtown Johnson City. From this location, they mined coal until 1814 when their mine failed due to bad ore quality. However, they continued to mine coal until their mine closed in 1825 because of environmental issues with nearby woods that were prone to fire; these woods are now part of downtown Johnson City." The town's fortunes changed after it became an agricultural center due to its location on a bend in the Cumberland River which facilitated irrigation agriculture through drip irrigation systems developed thanks to Colonel John Sikewsky who operated a large canal system between Jackson and Nashville in 1865." In 1886, Jno Hargrave donated land comprising most of what is now Downtown Johnson City to be used as a public square which still occupies that spot today." Between 1895-1906, 2 brands new brick buildings were built within limits set by then Mayor John Cavanaugh as part of renovations called "Nashville Renaissance". At this time Downtown also saw extensive electric lighting providing illumination throughout much of downtown including many shopping districts such as Exchange Place where department stores like Macy's and Sears opened up along with other businesses (like Meyers Clothing Store). Also music halls like Municipal Auditorium hosted popular shows such as vaudeville while theaters like Majestic Theatre screened Westerns or plays such as "Proud Mary" or "Of Mice And Men". Thisrenowned architect Percy Aitken designed several buildings within Nashvillenese Renaissance period including First National Bank (now Nissan Stadium) Athletic Club (now Ford Field), American Legion Hall (now Veterans Affairs Medical Center), Masonic Temple/First Presbyterian Church (later Baptist Temple), Tennessee School for Boys/Second Baptist Church (later Methodist Episcopal Church) and Post Office Building/Community House (now University Hospital). On October 3rd 1906 Mayor Cavanaugh dedicated two brand new brick buildings at 400 Main Street - one being known as Edward Ladd Block which housed both government services like telephone service and printing press while another building - now known as Midtown Tower - housed business services such as law courts., post office., grocery store etc… johnson city's renaissance had finally arrived!
