The plant closed in 1968 but its memory lives on through GM's research center located adjacent to downtown which continues today as the University of Tennessee Research Institute (UTRI). Today, many businesses still operate within downtownJohnson City including Waffle House & Pancake House; Subway; JJ's Pizza Place; Barnes & Noble Bookstore; Walmart Supercenter; Ford dealership; Tyson’s BBQ ; First Baptist Church ; Clarksville landmark hotel(now Embassy Suites); and numerous restaurants including Panda Express, Wendy’s China Town BBQ Buffet & More! Additionally, several heavy industry businesses such as Alcoa Aluminum Company AG., PPG Industries Incorporated., JBL Audio Installation Ltd., UTC Steel Fabricators have relocated or closed down within recent years resulting in an overall decrease of employment within Downtown Jackson County since 2000 when Census data reflect just over 1,000 employed individuals! In addition to these larger companiesowntown also includes dozens of small businesses primarily catering to both locals and visitors alike with several locally owned gas stations along with several convenience stores!/grocery stores/ drugstores dotting Downtown Jackson County Roads throughout! Johnson and his brother-in-law John Swayne. The city was named for General Andrew Johnson, who served as president of the United States from 1865 to 1868 and as commander in chief of the Union army during the American Civil War. The first settlers in what is now Johnson City were Methodist missionaries from South Carolina who arrived in 1853. They built a log cabin on a bend of the river near present day Broadway Street and started a small farm which they sold to other pioneers in 1854. In 1856, James A. Johnson moved his family to this area and began to build a store and Post Office on what is now Main Street corner First Avenue North (now US Highway 127). He also founded the town square with two large logs that still stand today across from Main Street Baptist Church (now used as an athletic field). The first school was erected on main square by Mr. Johnson in 1861; it was called "Pioneer Academy". In 1863, Confederate soldiers burned down Mr. Johnson's store so he had to rebuild it from scratch within three months! In 1865, General Andrew Johnson visited these new settlements and pronounced them "safe for mail." The community rapidly grew around this railroad stop with people coming all season long for goods available only at this station! By 1870, there were over 100 residents living here including 20 businesses! This growth continued until 1903 when World War I hit America hard and many families left town for munitions factories overseas; however, business continued strong until after World War II when oil exploration began bringing new residents into town but no more trains stopped here so businesses closed their doors or moved out altogether In recent years several events have taken place that have helped shape current day life here inJohnson City: 1) On July 10th, 2002 tornado touched down just south of downtown prompting revitalization projects such as code enforcement/street cleaning/repairing infrastructure 2) On November 15th Hurricane Rita made landfall causing extensive damage throughout southern Sullivan County 3) On April 27th2015 Hurricane Moore made landfall causing significant destruction through much of central Sullivan County 4) On September 25th2018 Tennessee Valley Authority’s Watts Bar Dam failed resulting devastating flooding across much of central SullivanCounty
Johnson City is a town in Johnson County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 3,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Knoxville metropolitan area. The first settler in Johnson City was James Coker in 1833. He started a mill on the Cumberland River and named it Coker's Mill after himself. In 1834, he married Anna Rankin and founded Rankin & Coker millinery shop. The Rankins were the first white women to own land in Johnson City. They raised corn and hay for their farm until they built a tannery in 1854 which became one of the most important businesses in town until it closed its doors in 1960. The Rankins also donated land to build First Baptist Church which opened its doors on December 1, 1868. In 1865, John Pritchard moved from Hardman County to Johnson City and began trading goods with local farmers along the Cumberland River for flour and other supplies needed by his new community. He soon developed an extensive trade with eastern Tennessee including items such as salt pork, cottonseed oil, vinegar, shoeshine waxes and candles from Kentuckycandleshops such as Harpers Ferry Light Company and Gilded Age Candleshop inside what is now known as Pritchard's Market Place downtown today). He also built a log cabin near where his current business building stands today (now known as "Pritchard's General Store" across Main Street) as his home base while doing business out of his storerooms during colder months when access to trails was limited or difficult to find outside of town limits.. In 1870 John Pritchard Jr., died leaving behind two sons John Q.(Jr.)and Daniel A.(A.), who continued their father’s business operations until 1911 when it passed into family hands again when Daniel A.(A.) sold it to Jno H(eorge) Griggs who operated it until 1978 when it reopened under the name "Johnson City Furniture Co." This company manufactured furniture for local households through mail order throughout much of the 20th century before shutting down during World War II due to wartime restrictions on wood product production; however many pieces still remain extant at this location today.. In 1978-1979 Jno H(eorge) Griggs reopened "Johnson City Furniture Co." under new ownership after being absent from operation for several years due to health reasons In 1951-1952 Lyndon B(elvin) LBJ served 2 terms as Governor of Tennessee In 1962 Bryant DeBerry became Mayor of Knoxville In 1964–1965 Gaylord Perry became Mayor of Johnson City In 1967–1968 Gaylord Perry left office effective 6/1/1967 after serving 2 terms consecutively
