It is the largest city in Hardin County by population and the second-largest city in Tennessee after Memphis. Johnson City is located on National Guard troops' Fort Campbell base. Johnson City is also home to the world's only underground nuclear reactor which continues to operate today despite being off limits to the public for almost seventy years. In 1828, General Jackson's army passed through here during his Campaign against Whigs in what is now known as Battle of Chickamauga Creek. General Jackson's dead bodylay near present day downtown Johnson City for several days before being transported back down Chickamauga Creek to Chattanooga where he was interred nearby. After the war ended in 1865, many Union soldiers were brought here from Virginia and other states as Methodists began moving westward into Tennessee after the war concluded. In 1867, a group of businessmen led by Jeptha Blythe organized what would become known as The Cotton Exchange Company which marketed cotton exports from Johnson City through various ports around Southeast Asia including Singapore and Hong Kong). The company grew rapidly and soon had shippingyards and warehouses throughout town. By 1870-71 it had sent over 1 million pounds (521 metric tons) of cotton across seas to European markets alone! By 1920, however, economic conditions in America had deteriorated enough that many residents deserted their towns in search of better opportunities elsewhere. In 1930 only 1% of the total population lived in Johnson City; however it continued to grow rapidly due to new subdivisions and businesses being founded in adjacent rural areas until 1990 when it officially disappeared from census data altogether.
