When Tennessee became a state in 1907, Johnson City became an incorporated town under the laws of that state rather than under those of Kentucky which had been its original territory. The town has remained largely unchanged since then except for some additions and deletions due to growth or change within its borders: most notably the incorporation of neighboring towns West Memphis (1927) and East Memphis (1968). The current mayor is Darrell Moulton who was elected on August 3rd, 2018
