The first mayor was Isham Hogg (elected November 3rd 1819), who served until May 10th 1830 when he was replaced by Prentiss Hardin due to termlimits set in place during the time period by then-Governor James Kenedy. In 1870 Knoxville became one of sixteen new states admitted into the United States; it did not have its own government until 1901 when it passed through Congress under Article I Section 8 as part of Reconstruction following Confederate rule over all three southern states that seceded from the Union – Alabama (), Mississippi () and Texas (). As a result of these changes Knoxvillians voted overwhelmingly to secede from Tennessee on April 12th 1861 becoming an independent republic known as "The Confederacy". When hostilities recommenced between America & Great Britain over tariffs following Confederate secession most Americans approved trade restrictions against their former Southern allies while most Tennesseans continued support for their Unionist government throughout the war. At this point Knoxville had become "The Arsenal" or "Arsenal City" due to its importance in military production during The War Between The States including artillery work at nearby Muscle Shoals Naval Shipbuilding Company where more than 50% all shipbuilding occurring during that conflict took place thanks largely to imports from British Isles . During World War II much industry switched location because wartime Production Codes limited output down range so many large companies closed up shop around here like Ford Motors etc... but we never forget our history or roots cause those names still ring out today no matter where we go

He ordered an investigation into possible Confederate sympathies in Knoxville, which led to its annexation by Tennessee during the American Civil War. After the war ended in 1865, Knoxville resumed itsrowth rate and reached 5,006 residents by 1880. In 1937, Knoxville became one of seventeen cities in Tennessee that were incorporated into Tennessee metropolitan areas under a new state government called " Metropolitan Nashville-Knoxville."
