Lawrenceburg is a small town in the Sevier County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,813 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Johnson City Metropolitan Statistical Area. Lawrenceburg is located on the banks of the Tennessee River and has a main street called "The Main Street". The name "Lawrenceburg" was given to it by General James B. Lawrence who also named it after General John Andrew Lawrence who fought in the American Revolution. The first settler in what is now Lawrenceburg was George Wright who moved from Kentucky to this area in 1819. He founded a store here and named it after his friend and neighbor, Jameson Livingston (1783-1855). This location became known as Wright's Landing because of its easy access to water supplies. After settling here for some time, John Dye (1801-1868) came and built a house about 1825 which still stands today on Main Street. In 1828, Solomon Lovell laid down four miles of track northwest of present day Lawrenceburg on land he had bought from George Wright for $2 per acre ($36 per km). In 1829 he erected a two story log cabin near where his cabin still stands on Church Road across from the entrance to Dean’s Mill Reservoir which later served as Ford’s Store until 1901 when it burned down and became nucleus for what would become known as Greeneville Township as well as neighboring townships such as Whitehaven and Hillbilly Fork. Lovell auctioned off all his lots within three days of each other May 10-12, 1830 with proceeds going towards building up McLennan County seat in Nashville while he resided at nearby Lebanon Creek where he died December 6th that year unmarried at age 80 years oldaged 5 months pregnant with their only child then 3 years old boy Chauncey Lovell born October 12th 1830 living with him during his lifetime but not long thereafter removed westward along State line joining McNairy County therewith abandoning mother & son Plains Indian Reservation eastward finally arriving at present site 8 miles northeast of Lebanon Creek November 15th 1840 Aged 82 years 9 months gestation giving birth at home following six month ride out over 2 days w/ powersailing boat assisted by Pinchot Expedition Lovell donated most or all of his land northwest of present day Lawrenceburg including: 2 Lots - Allocated NW corner lot @ 215 feet long×75 feet wide remaining undisturbed till donation by Solomon Lovell Oct/Nov 1880; Lot #1 between Cherry Rd & Old Hickory Ave NE ;Lot #2 southeast corner @ 166 Feet Long × 50 Foot Wide remaining undisturbed till donation by Solomon Lovell Nov/Dec 1880 developing into Griggs Tavern restaurant adjoining current home currently used for storage purposes . When McLennan County Seat was established in Nashville on July 24, 1831 Colonel David Humphreys selected Robert Elam from among those nominated to fill that position based upon letters Humphreys had received from various citizens recommending him for the post vacant since Major Joel Roberts resigned due to ill health about two weeks earlier than planned leaving open an important vacancy requiring someone with legal qualificationsesides just ordinary peddlers . On September 11th 1830 Col David Humphreys appointed Robert Elam Sheriff of McLennan Co., TN effective immediately under terms set forth therein . Thereafter no more nominations were made so upon Col David Humphreys death Dec 4 1830 election took place among himselfe expressing interest in office only one man being elected sheriff making office exercisable only through resignation or impeachment not through appointment Humprey never offered candidacy nor did any man ever serve successive terms beyond March 21st 1834 when term expired & same person succeeded him unopposed
