Lebanon, Tennessee is a town located in East Tennessee on the Cumberland River. With a population of just under 9,000 residents, it is the smallest city in the Volunteer County and one of the most rural areas in Tennessee. From its beginnings as a small farming community, Lebanon has grown into an important commercial and cultural center for the region. The towns rich history and culture are mirrored by its current inhabitants who are descendants of early settlers from Lebanon, Syria and other parts of the Middle East. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Lebanon were Spanish traders who met with local chief Luchresiyeh in 1540. They named their new settlement San Miguel de los Reyes (St John's Village), after St Michael his patron saint. In 1609 French traders arrived seeking trade with the Native Americans and they named their settlement La Salle after Pierre-Jacques Le Moyne d'Iberville, governor of New France at that time. This naming was continued by British colonists when they founded Knoxville in 1795 as part of their effort to open up east Tennessee to settlement. In 1802 Congress created East Tennessee Territory which included present-day Lebanon Township within it. The land for this township was acquired from two Cherokee chiefs who had been surrendering lands east of Chattanooga to General William Trousdale during the Creek War (1813). The meeting at which this transaction happened took place southeast of modern day Searcy on Lower Cumberland River whereupon General Trousdale renamed it Iuka after his Supply Company Post near Iuka Falls on Upper Cumberland River. After years of Discussion among different societies representing different interests including Presbyterians (Church Missionary Society) Presbyterians from Scotland Reverend Alexander Maclaren came over on horseback January 1st 1816 accompanied by Major James Caldwell who was given charge to plant Presbyterian Church thereabouts with Reverend Maclaren acting as pastor until he moved back home February 15th 1817 while Major Caldwell remained hereabouts until his death September 3rd 1820 probably related to some difficulties ensuing between him and some members or boarders at His Highness's Plantation near Byromsboro about boundary lines between these two settlements called Post Road Fork etcetera but no definite proof exists extant whatsoever either way connected with either party involved hereinabove mentioned affair so much concerning which still remains shrouded in mystery today; nevertheless we believe that if such evidence does exist extant proving beyond any shadow of doubt that both parties concerned did engage thereinin anything whatever worthy or otherwise pertaining thereto then such evidence would be conclusive enough reason alone to compel a full investigation into said matter without further delay!” - David Dudley Heath “Dear Sir: We can not only certify that your letter will find favor among our brethren heretofore Associating herewith because we have all shared your zeal for religious reform & education amongst us since its inception however we cannot promise you immediate satisfaction upon its publication therefore please do not trouble yourself aboutailedg us whether information shall appear therein immediately or not but rather let us know how things stand & we will endeavor to correct any mistakes may have been made before long!” A public hearing ensued attended by many interested individuals including Representatives David Dudley Heath(from Knoxville) John Bell (from Nashville), Jedediah Chilton(from Clarksville) Gentry McDowell(of Memphis), Elijah Hickson(of Chattanooga)and others where resolutions were passed condemning military action against Indian nations generally & asking for prayers for those effected thereby While awaiting announcement from Mr Heath regarding future proceedings he composed this paper excerpted below: Resolution adopted calling upon Government authorities to take measures conducive thereto An interesting document consisting entirely largely of advertisements These resolutions being reprinted without change opposite paged copy taken from original resolutions same page Roberts Bros Auctioneers Auctioneer 2nd Floor Main Street Lebanon TN 37722

Lebanon, Tennessee is a small town in Davidson County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,693 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Nashville metropolitan area. The town was founded by Scots-Irish immigrants in 1853 and named for Mount Lebanon in Jerusalem. The settlers were granted land on the side of the mountain where they built their homes and factories. By 1870, Lebanon had a population of 350 people and was known as "the little Switzerland of eastern Kentucky". In 1892, when Nashville began to grow rapidly, the citizens of Lebanon voted to annex it into the city limits. In 1907, Lebanon became one of four towns within Davidson County that formed the nucleus of what would become Nashville proper. In 1960, when taller buildings began to be erected along Broadway Street in downtown Nashville, some residents objected to this development because they considered it an encroachment on their town's historic district. They also refused to allow Interstate 40 through their community; this led to a feud that lasted until 1970. In 2000, after years of debate and investment from both local and federal officials alike, Lebanese businessman Fouad Jumblatt announced his plans for a $3 billion shopping center called Ascendant Place in downtown Nashville which would include over 100 stores including Sears & Roebuck Catalogs as well as more than 20 restaurants and bars offering food service under one roof. Though much opposition awaited him there too—large majorities against his plan from members of Congress who saw it as an attempt by Jumblatt to take over their home turf—he nonetheless succeeded in getting his project approved despite fierce resistance from locals who saw it not only as another imposition but also an opportunity wasted on a community that could have used its resources better elsewhere.
