Lewisburg is a small town in central Appalachia, located about seventy miles northeast of Nashville on the Cumberland River. The population was 3,853 at the 2010 census. Lewisburg is named for General James Wilkinson who fought in the American Revolution and later served as a United States Senator from Tennessee. The town slogan is "The Gateway to the South." The land that now makes up Lewisburg was first settled by Germans in 1796. A shop called "Fritz's" was founded in 1810 by German-born Nicholas Fritz and his brother Johann, both of whom were whiskey merchants. In 1811, John Wolfe established a distillery known as Wolfe's Run Distillery which still operates today. In 1814, Colonel Robert Ewing purchased 350 acres (16 hectares) of land east of present-day Lewisburg from Daniel Boone and began developing it into what would become an agricultural community with several hundred homes and barns. In 1835, Colonel Nathan Bedford Forrest purchased 1,000 acres (400 hectares) of current-day Lewisburg from Nicholas Fritz for $5 per acre ($140 per hectare). At this time, Lewisburg consisted only of a few log cabins and a few farmsteads scattered around two square miles (4 km²). Forrest began expanding his plantation holdings into what are now parts of Johnson City and Murfreesboro before he died in 1895. After Forrest's death, his son William Earl Forrest took over his business interests including the development of the nearby city of Antioch which gradually replaced Lewisburgh as the principal community near which most people lived until after World War II when Johnson City became the predominant center for residents in eastern Tennessee. During World War II many heavy industry plants were built within or near Lewisburgh including V-2 rocket production at Kelly Air Force Base; munitions manufacturing at Smyth Army Ammunition Plant; aluminum manufacture at Phelps Dodge Corporation’s Knoxville plant; steel production at Republic Steel Works;BTW auto parts plant; coal mine; water tower/pump station complex; nine brick churches completed between 1945 and 1949 including denominations Lutheran (1892), Methodist (1912), Baptist (1920), Presbyterian (1927), Episcopal (1945), Christian Science(1893), Stone Mountain(1974) - all except Christ Church Cathedral being destroyed during war but rebuilt either shortly afterwards or continued operation through post-war years Lewisburgh experienced significant growth following its incorporation as a municipality on December 6th 1980 when about 2200 people living within its limited boundaries moved to new housing developments located just outside its limits while also opening their businesses to generate additional employment opportunities within their newly incorporated municipality despite continuing economic decline throughout much southern Appalachian County prior to this increased population density resulting primarily from suburban expansion adjacent to downtown areas adjacent to Interstate Highway 55 caused by general trends across much rural Appalachia toward suburbanization/deindustrialization while more recently much greater Memphis metropolitan area experienced increases in populationdensity along I-65 corridor while remaining largely suburbanized portions adjacent to downtown areas although some reverse trend has occurred recent expansions beyond formerly designated city limits into once rural countryside leading again rapidly growing communities adjacent to downtown areas although some reverse trend has occurred]
