The racial makeup of the town was 97% White; 0% African American; 0% Native American; 1% Asian; 0% Pacific Islander; and 2% from two or more races. Manchester is a city in the U.S. state of Tennessee, and the county seat of Davidson County. The population was 316 at the 2010 census. Manchester is located on the Cumberland River, about 20 miles (32 km) east of Nashville and 50 miles (80 km) west of Knoxville. The river has served as a natural boundary between successive portions of what are now Davidson County and counties to the north and west since colonial times. In 1806, when Tennessee became a state, Manchester was its first capital. Manchester's early history can be traced back to 1796 when General James Robertson founded a trading post known as Fortunato's Fort on what is now downtown Manchester. A few years later, he erected another fort named Fort Loudoun near present-day Lebanon Road and Old Hickory Boulevard in what is today downtown Manchester Center. In 1800, Colonel John Sevier founded Nashville with land grants from King George III in order to provide better access to water resources for settlers in the area. In 1806, after Tennessee became a state, Manchester was its first capital under Governor James Robertson.. The city grew rapidly during this time due to new transportation options being developed such as roads and railroads; this growth led to increased business opportunities for businesses like mercantile stores and cotton plantations along with new construction projects such as churches and schools across town.. By 1830, there were over 200 businesses operating in Manchester; by 1840 that number had doubled.. In 1849–50, Manchester hosted the International Industrial Exhibition which showcased American technologies including steamboats powered by sails alone and sewing machines.. During World War II, Manchester played an important role in military production with its industries working on everything from aircraft parts to tanks; also during this time period many people moved into the city from rural areas around town..
