Manchester, Tennessee is a small town in the judicial district of Hardin County, Tennessee. The population was 2,521 at the 2010 census. The town was founded in 1837 by Methodist missionaries. Manchester is one of the few towns in Hardin County that has been continuously inhabited since before statehood. Manchester's early settlers were Methodist missionaries who traveled to the area to proselytize and teach Christianity. In 1837, two men named James and John Henson bought a tract of land east of Manchester from Major General David Coffee for $100 ($140 USD as of 2019). They named their new settlement after their home town in England (Manchester), which they left behind when they moved westward in 1836. In 1840, John Henson married Anna Morrison, descendant of pioneer settler Peter Morrison. The community grew rapidly during the 1830s and 1840s due to its location at a crossroads where several trails crossed each other. In 1846, Manchester became part of Hardin County when it was created from parts of Knox and Robertson counties. At that time, it had a population of just over 100 people. By 1860, Manchester had become an important stop on the Nashville-Memphis Railroad due to its strategic location near both cities' stations on that line. During the Civil War, Manchester served as an important military garrison for Hardin County because it lay close to Chattanooga and supply depot located there for Confederate forces besieging that city during the war's duration. After the war ended, many residents returned home and continued to live in Manchester until around 1870 when most people went back east or fled into Mexico City during Reconstruction following Ulysses S Grant's victory over Confederate forces at Appomattox Court House four years earlier. In 1865, John Henson died at age 85 while living in Corinthia Springs with his wife Anna; he is buried there alongside his wife and son Jameson Henson Jr.. His widow remarried within six months afterward to Charles Culp (1824-1910), one of Louisville’s leading attorneys who had come down East during Reconstruction period as an inspector general for newly admitted states such as Kentucky.
