Mcminnville is a small town in Tennessee that was founded by Scots-Irish settlers in the early 1800s. Today, the town lies just south of Knoxville and east of Chattanooga. In 1866, when local residents voted to secede from Knox County (then part of Tennessee),McGinniss asked President Abraham Lincoln to appoint him as their delegate to attend a secession convention which would be held in Nashville in order to secure their independence from Knox County. At the convention's meeting on May 9th, 1865, McGinnisse unsuccessfully petitioned for secession recognition from Knox County authorities; however, he did manage to get his message out to various resident groups throughout the county.)
