Mcminnville is a small town in Hardin County, Tennessee, United States. It was founded in 1821 by John and Deborah McDaniel. The community grew rapidly following the opening of the Cumberland Railroad in 1825, and by 1830 it had a population of 350 people. By 1850, the population had increased to 1,100 people. In 1870, the community became part of Knoxville; however, Mcminnville retained its own government until 1937. The local school system was merged into the Knox County School District in 1957. The history of Mcminnville begins with John McDaniel who settled on land north of what is now Mcminnville in 1821. He and his wife Deborah soon started raising crops and livestock as well as teaching their children how to farm. By 1830, they had a family of six children: three boys and three girls.John built a log cabin near present-day Mcminnville on November 3rd that year according to one account. He named his new settlement "Mc Daniel's Ferry" after himself and his father-in-law James McDowell (who had also settlements established at Morristown and Kittrell). The ferry helped travelers get from east to west across the Cumberland River during those early days when there was no bridge or other means for connecting these two counties! As time passed, more settlers arrived in Mc minnville including some from Illinois who were looking for land to settle after being driven out of Michigan by Native American raiders! As more people came through town, churches were built too which served as social hubs for residents during those early days! After Independence Day in 1827 when Kentucky became an independent state following the War of 1812 (the Americans won), many locals decided to celebrate their victory at this locale!On October 8th1827 a group of men led by Ebenezer Sprague set out from Knoxvillee bound for Nashville intending to offer prayers at Mount Zion Cemetery before traveling downriver towards Chattanooga where they would meet up with others returning home from celebrating Independence day there! Sprague’s party reached Henderson Tavern about 5pm but never got very far because they ran into strong head wind conditions coming downriver that afternoon !!! They abandoned their attempt to reach Nashvillleaghtly prematurely due tp weather conditions !!!! A postscript note found among Sprague’s personal effects claims he made it all the way back safely However another report suggests he may not have even made it that far due tp boat problems caused by high water levels upstream!!!So much for Ebenezer Sprague's grandiose plans!! Nevertheless historians continueto place great emphasis on this little known event that took place within easy miles OFKnoxvillee!!!!! This fact has brought renewed interest both locally AND nationally over recent years resulting in many visits from interested parties !!!! In March 1865, General Andrew Johnson was inaugurated as the 44th President of the United States. A few weeks later on April 14th, Abraham Lincoln was assassinated in Washington D.C., setting off a nationwide civil war that lasted for over six years. Mcminnville was one of several small communities in East Tennessee affected by the war. In late 1871, the Union Army destroyed a bridge over the Cumberland River in order to end Confederate resistance and open up new land to white settlers. This event ended Reconstruction in East Tennessee and caused many Native American people to leave their homes and become refugees. Mcminnville experienced some prosperity during the early decades of its history because it became a center for cotton production. However, this period also saw some negative aspects such as political corruption and economic decline. In 1924, The Smithers Company built a large cotton gin at Mcminnville which helped revive the town's economy. However, this period also saw an increase in crime and social unrest which led to several community-wide riots throughout the 1930s. By the time World War II began, Mcminnville had fallen into disrepair due to lack of resources and infrastructure; however, it slowly regained its former glory during wartime when many military installations were erected here including Fort Knox (now known asKnox County Memorial Park). After the war ended,Mcminnville experienced another period of decline until it regained some stability around 2000 when it hosted its first major festival called "Tennessee Heritage Days."
