Mount Juliet (8,450 feet) is a mountain located in Searcy County, Tennessee. It was first named by the surveyors of the General Surveyor's Office in 1818 and it was formally named Mount Juliet by act of the United States Congress on November 2, 1838. The mountain has been described as "the most conspicuous peak in all of eastern Tennessee." The peak is part of the Appalachian Mountains and straddles a border between Cumberland County and Hardin County. At 8,450 feet, Mount Juliet is one of the highest mountains in Tennessee. The peak also has two lakes at its base: Hiwassee Lake and Laurel Lake. Hiwassee Lake is much larger than Laurel Lake and it covers an area of 5 acres while LaurelLake only covers 1 acre. As a result, HiwasseeLake is considered to be more important because it provides drinking water for nearby settlements while LaurelLake only provides minor amounts of water. The first permanent human settlement at Mount Juliet occurred in 1785 when Captain James Robertson erected a cabin on Hiwassee Lake for his own use and for that of his son John Robertson who had just arrived from Scotland as part of an American trading expedition under George Washington's command. By 1800, there were over twenty-five families living around or near Mount Juliet with about ninety-six individuals working on the land which today makes up about 2/5ths of Searcy County's total surface area. In 1825, gold was discovered at Hiwassee Lakeshaeck but no attempt was made to mine it because no money could be made from such an insignificant find at this time. However, goldmining did start later on after improved methods were developed including assay rods which allowed accurate determinationof metal content in ore samples A new road was built connecting Nashville with Chattanooga during the 1870s making transportation easier for goods and people moving between these two cities as well as other parts eastward across the state line By 1882 there were 9 business establishments operating within five miles radius including 4 hotels; 3 stores; 1 grain elevator; 6 cooperage shops; 7 agricultural stores; 8 blacksmiths; 2 harnessmakers; 1 printing office etc., among others In 1902 Stagecoach Lines opened its first commercial station at Great Smoky Mountains National Park south side of town providing passenger service between Nashville and Knoxville In 1916 General Electric inaugurated their electric lights system throughout eastern Tennessean generating electricity from coal burning power plants thus becoming oneofthe earliest electrical companies in America During World War II production began on Camp Shelby munitions plant producing ammunition for both USAAF fighter pilots stationed at Hammond Field northwestTNand Navy personnel assigned to escort Convoy PQ-17 offloading supplies along Iwo Jima way back in 1945
