The new Seviers cabin served as their summer home until 1902 when they moved to nearby Lebanon to become farmers. In 1916, during World War I, Mount Juliet became one of four towns within Knox County that voted to secede from Tennessee because they felt that their taxes were too high. They rejoined Tennessee after the war ended but remain an unincorporated community today. Mount Juliet has experienced some significant changes over time including becoming an agricultural center due to its location near major highways and also experiencing growth in manufacturing due to its proximity to Nissan and other manufacturers during the late 20th century. However, recent growth has been limited due to concerns about traffic congestion close to major shopping malls and highways. Mount Juliet was a small town in McMinn County, Tennessee located on the Cumberland River just upstream from the present day city of Memphis. The town was founded by wagon drivers who traveled up and down the river to sell goods. The first post office was established in 1819. By 1835, Mount Juliet had a population of about 100 people and a school. In 1837, an act was passed that allowed white men to vote without having to serve in the militia. This change led to growth in Mount Juliet as more and more white men moved into the area. In 1840, there were still only 100 people living in Mount Juliet but by 1850, it had grown to 1,000 people. On July 6th 1861, Confederate General Robert Ewell made his appearance at Mount Juliet and ordered all citizens to raise their arms against the Union army. By September 1861, most of the town had been destroyed by Union troops during the Battle of Corinth and it is not known if any residents remained or fled after that event. The town again experienced growth when railroads came through McMinn County and new businesses began operating there. Two schools were built here including one for African Americans which opened in 1865. The community continued growing until 1975 when it lost its status as a municipality because it did not meet certain municipal requirements such as having a fire department or library. Today, Mount Juliet is home to a park that includes a visitor center and several historical buildings dating back to 1901-1912
The first white people in the area were Methodist missionaries, who came in 1812. The town was founded by General John C. Shelby and his wife, Martha, on a bluff overlooking the Cumberland River. They named it Mount Juliet after their home state of Virginia. Mount Juliet became a county seat in 1840 and was the site of some of the most significant events in its history during that time. In 1868, it was the site of a bloody battle between Confederate forces and Union troops which resulted in over 20 deaths. In 1898, Mount Juliet officially became part of Tennessee when it joined other states within the Union as the 14th state. It remains an important location for both local residents and tourists today.
