The first gun case company in Mount Juliet was founded by Hiram Abrams and his brother Isaac in 1868. The company manufactured rifle cases and pistols out of wood. In 1870, they started making gun cases out of leathern fabric. In 1871, they started producing pistol cases out of cloth. In 1872, they started manufacturing rifle cases out of metal and using Bakelite for the barrel tips. They also began using brass fittings for the triggers and sights on their rifles. In 1874, they produced their first revolver case which featured a nickel-plated trigger and an ivory grip with a gold tone band around it. In 1865, John Sutherlin moved to Mount Juliet from Decatur, Alabama with his family and began farming hereabouts. By 1870 he had erected several homes and an orchard/fruit stand near present-day Interstate 40/Route 15 intersection east of downtown (the highway now known as Third Street). Sutherlin continued to farm until his death in 1898; thereafter most attention focused onchurches, schools and other development within the community center block bounded by Main Street (north), I-40E/Route 15W (east), Third Street (south) and US 41N/4th Avenue NE (west). Southerlin's school—now Union Elementary School—opened for instruction on December 12, 1870; however it burned down October 3, 1871 due to fire caused by sparks flying from heated bricks used for construction materials inside the school building during renovation work; again information about this event came through local newspapers which had followed up with inquiries about rebuilding efforts following Highway 40 access improvements completed just west of town since Reconstruction Period when these Roads were re-numbered erraticly going east instead of north like they are currently supposed to go based upon state map boundaries at that time...It should be noted that large fires often destroyed early pioneer settlements but more often resultedangerous overnight lightning strikes which would start buildings on fire then quickly burn out so such inferno’s could easily be extinguished without causing any physical damage...
