The town's name changed to Murfreesboro in 1865 when it became part of the newly formed Hardin County. In 1870, Murfreesboro enlarged its boundaries to include parts of Knoxville proper. In 1902, a new electric railway line called the Nashville and Chattanooga Railway (N&C) was extended into Hardin County from Lebanon through Murfreesboro; this made Murfreesboro one of the few cities east of Memphis to have access to high-speed rail transportation. Burgeoning industry brought further development to the community during this time including steel mills, meatpacking plants, and other heavy manufacturing establishments throughout the 1940s and 1950s; however, much of that growth came to an end with the advent of suburbanization around 1990 due to dwindling demand for manufacturing jobs within urban areas across America. Today, Murfreesboro is a small but prosperous center located within easy commuting distance of several major metropolitan areas including Nashville and Memphis as well as numerous smaller cities throughout Tennessee and Kentucky; although it retains some traces of its Rust Belt roots due to its large concentration of automotive repair shops, furniture stores, car dealerships etc., overall economic conditions have softened since the late 1990s which has resulted in increased tourist visitation which helps contribute significantly towards GDP growth rate over that period despite continued declines seen among real estate values along with falling jobless rates - all indicative evidence that while many aspects may remain unchanged since then economic conditions are slowly improving nonetheless there are long-term risks posed by aging infrastructure or even more sudden decreases or closures within certain industries should those trends reverse suddenly (i.e., if technological advances lead not just more mass production but also mass marketing leading instead only incremental increases defined by lower unit prices making these products more affordable for consumers).

In 1861, Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest attacked Union forces at Stone Bridge near present-day Corinth. After an engagement that lasted several hours, Forrest's army was routed and more than 100 people were killed or captured including many of Murfreesboro's citizens. After the war ended, the population declined because of economic reasons. However, due to development around the new university located in downtown Murfreesboro from the late 1800s until after World War II it regained some of its former glory as a major center for education and industry during this time period
