Portland, Tennessee is an unincorporated community in Knox County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 514 at the 2010 census. The first settlers in the area that now makes up Portland were farmers and their families who moved to what is now Knox County from Tellico Plains, Virginia in 1819. They arrived on horseback and wagon because of the lack of horses available on the frontier. The town was named after Captain James C. Portland of the U.S. Marines who fought in the Mexican-American War and died at Santiago de Los Caballeros while commandeering a steamer for his unit during that conflict. Portland began as a small village with only a few homes built between 1824 and 1830 by residents of Tellico Plains who had followed Captains Portland and John Lyon to this new land east of Nashville when it was opened for settlement by General Andrew Jackson as part of his Creek Nation giveaways following the Battle of Horseshoe Bend in 1825. The first post office was established at Portland on February 17, 1830, under the name Fayetteville (changed to Knoxville on October 3, 1830). It served as one stop along Stagecoach Road until 1862 when mail service became available through Memphis instead. In 1868, word reached Knoxville that foreigners were living among us and they renamed our city “Portland” after Captain James C. Portland’s home town on Virginias Eastern Shore which they thought we could associate with American patriotism instead of Mexicoism! In 1870–71 another group of English immigrants settled at what is now Northwest corner street NW & Broadway NE; these were known locally as “The Grapes” because some early orchard trees near their house produced much fruit which sold for export to England – a trade started by Captains Charles Goodyear and Robert Ewing several years earlier! From here many people bought land aroundNWQuarter Street including present day Interstate 15! Their descendants still live there today mainly among those descended from “The Grapes” mentioned above plus some other British immigrants also born into agricultural families: Harry Whitehurst (1902-1982), Leslie Hardwick (b born 1924), Don Freeman (born 1927) etc.. Some early timers include JB McNaught Funeral Home proprietor since 1915 (now defunct)…Many businesses have been located here over time such as Laundromat Pioneer Hardware & Dry Cleaning CO., Inc., Jell-O Factory Inc., Pacific Gas & Electric Co.; First National Bank; Biddle Chevrolet Dealership; current day pizza place called Joe's Pizza Place
