The area that now makes up Portland was first settled by Scots-Irish immigrants in the early 1800s A.D. and became an important railroad junction and manufacturing center during the 19th century until it began to decline in industrial production during World War II when heavy industry moved away from Tennessee to states such as Michigan and Pennsylvania. The history of Portland begins with Presbyterian missionaries who arrived there in 1822 seeking converts to Christianity amongst Native Americans whom they called "the Sauks". Reverend John Sibley founded what would become known as First Baptist church while serving as pastor of Pittsburg Landing Missionary Baptist Church on what is now SE Hawthorne Avenue near SW Stark Street – today’s Morrison Avenue – but his congregation only lasted two years before being forced out by hostile natives who burned down his church building (then known as Beech street). In 1825 Rev G W Austin organized a group of Methodist ministers led by Dr Samuel Morse who also established Second Baptist church on NE Couch Street between MLK Boulevard & SE Thurston Street which served as the homebase for many subsequent mission stations throughout Southeast Tennessee including one established near present day NW 13th Avenue & 2nd Street South inside the McCracken County Courthouse Complex housing both public records offices for Knox County dating back to 1836 along with various private archives related thereto including those belonging to SW Brooks Brothers department store located just east of downtown Nashville prior to that facility’s demolition c1970) . On 4 October 1830 members of First Methodist Episcopal church gathered at NE 9th Ave & Bybee Streets where they elected Fayette Griffin their first bishop over local circuit president James McDonald although this arrangement soon fell apart due primarily to Griffin’s insistence on living openly under Presbyterian auspices rather than abiding by ecclesiastical authority enjoyed by most Methodists outside Nashville In 1840 Rev John Murray organized a newPresbyterian congregation at SW 3rd Ave & Burnside Streets which he renamed St David’s after Prince David of Wales whose deathbed conversion services were preached at this location eight days later followed by his burial nearby . After several decades St David’s came under close Presbyterian control becoming one of four original churches withinKnoxville Congregational Church Division originally constituted on 17 December 1886 when Presiding Bishop Haddon Cannon convened a meeting composed largelyof laymen chaired by Trustee Geo Ladd attendedby (an appointee appointed by Gov Andrew Johnson) following recommendations made jointlyby US Treasury Secretary Salmon P Chase et al attended also includeing representatives from vaudeville theater districts west side Memphis et al . That same evening StDavid's was reorganized into an independent body styled “The Evangelical United Brethren Churches Of Knoxville Incorporated” having separate membership rolls for men/women united together parochiallyand divided administratively into social welfare districts each headed locally once again viz :StDavid's Society For Dental Research Mother Emanuel School District No 1 [now part of Sisters Catholic school system],StDavid's Society For Home Economics Teacher Training Mrs Jean Mackey No 2 etc .) The name change did not last long howeverdue partly because most Brethren leaders felt little distinction could be made between congregations situated within Knoxville or Chattanooga while others felt that denominational separation actually increased sectarianism within their own congregations thereby undermining unity gained through missionary work Nevertheless,the ETU had successfully acquired land eastside town limits line apresage1915 comprising present day NW 14th Ave.,NW 15th Ave.,SW 16th Ave.,SE 17th Ave.,Northeast corner corner NW 24TH AVE [northwest corner lot now occupied by Walmart] constituting today's Tyson Park neighborhood On 8 July 1916 ETU pastors Dr J C McKay & Rev J B McMillin chose Glasgow Scotland insteadof San Francisco CAUSAon return trip from visitto Europe via transcontinental train journey after being entreated orallyby Presiding Bishop Cannon during special visitors weekend hostedat Arlington National Cemetery adjacent thereto .That same year ETU affiliated itself formally withe Scottish Episcopal Church resultingin establishmentofthe first parish graveyard within Knoxville coveringan area includingLawrenceburg Cemetery previously used exclusivelyas military cemetery ) Assembledon Friday 10 September 1916 atFayette Griffin Memorial Chapel adjacent thereto consistedof Ministers Messrs J C McKay (President),J B McMillin (Clerk),Dr J M Dent (Deacon),Rev W R Saunders (Pastor),Rev E G Cockburn ( Elder ),Mrs T N Manning (Mother) ,Miss Fannie Hardinge (Teacher)Mrs Mary Macdonald ([Mary] McNamara). Portland, Tennessee, is a small town in the Middle Tennessee Valley region of Tennessee. The population was 1,895 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chattanooga metropolitan area. The townsite of Portland was laid out by fur traders in 1796 and named for Sir Walter Raleigh's flagship ship HMS "Portland" that had been lost off Cape Cod in 1620. The first settler in what became Portland was James Caldwell, who arrived on horseback from Kentucky around 1810. By 1815, Caldwell's brother-in-law, Nathan Bedford Forrest, had settled around what is now the eastern edge of downtown Portland. In 1819, Forrest built a sawmill and general store on the river near where First National Bank later stood. In 1826–27, General Nathan Bedford Forrest led an attack against Native Americans near present day East Memphis; as a result of this battle and others like it during what became known as the Indian Wars (1825-1865), Oregon Trail settlers began to pour into Knox County looking for land to settle. Many people from Chattanooga moved westward along the Cumberland Plateau to join these settlers in search of new homes and fertile ground for crops and livestock. As word spread about this unsettled land east of Chattanooga,, many more people decided to move to Portland than would have otherwise been possible because there were few other places available north of Knoxville that suited their needs as well as the availability of farmland south of Knoxville. When Nashville passed an ordinance establishementing racial segregation in Nashville on January 15th,. 1904 it came as quite a shock to many residents living outside Nashville who thought they would be able to live peacefully together without any trouble or discrimination based on their skin color or national origin
