Sevierville is a small town in Williamson County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Knoxville Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in Sevierville was Levi Coffin in 1819. The town site was surveyed in 1827 by John Sevier and named for him. Sevier had been an officer with General Andrew Jackson's army during the Mexican-American War and later became a United States Senator from Tennessee. In 1851, Sevierville incorporated as a village under the name of "Easton." In 1861, when Confederate forces attacked Fort Sumter, Easton joined the Confederacy and its residents were among those captured or surrendered to Union troops. In 1865, after Confederate General Robert Easley's attack on Union forces at Sayretown resulted in more than 100 dead and 400 wounded, Sevier proposed that Sevierville become his headquarters for southern operations. As commander of all Union forces within two miles (3 km), he also served as governor of Tennessee during Reconstruction. After the war ended, Sevierville reverted to its original name until it changed again to "Sevierville" on July 15, 1907 upon incorporation into the Knoxville metropolitan area. A post office called Sevierville was established in 1827, and remained open until 1901. The current post office opened on November 3rd of that year; it has been operated by the Knoxville Post Office Department since then. In 1819, the Cherokee Removal Treaty was signed by United States President James K. Polk and Creek Nation Chief Etienne King. The treaty allowed the Cherokee to move from their home in southeastern Tennessee to Oklahoma. The first white settler in Sevier County was Captain John Griggs in 1824.
