The city of Springfield, Tennessee was founded in 1837 by James Franklin Grimes. The town became a part of the Union during the American Civil War and was destroyed by Confederate forces in 1865. In 1938, Springfield was renamed Clarksville after General A.J. Cline, who led Union troops against the Confederacy.
