Union City is a small city in Knox County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 7,476 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of Union City Township. The surrounding rural communities have a combined population of 9,811. The history of Union City goes back to 1821 when the first Europeans came to Tennessee and found land that would become Knox County. In 1839, nine men from northern Illinois formed the Second Knoxville Company and began exploring what would be their new home in southwest Tennessee. They named their new community "Union City" after the union between Great Britain and the United States which happened on July 4th, 1819. In 1861, during the American Civil War, Union City became an important supply center for General John Bell Hood's Confederate forces because it was located on his march from Chattanooga to Memphis. After General Robert Easley surrendered at Appomattox Court House in April 1865, Union City was burned by General Ulysses S Grant's army as part of his general move southward into north Alabama following Vicksburg Blockade. Today Union City is a small town with a diverse economy that includes agriculture and manufacturing along with services such as health care and education. The city has many events throughout year including its annual Oktoberfest celebration which features German-style food and beer gardens across downtown; art exhibitions; concerts; plays; and world-renowned fireworks displays over Interstate 40 just outside the city limits on October 15th each year). The cotton industry played an important role in the city’s development and continues to play a significant role today. Today, Union City is home to a number of businesses including two banks, several restaurants and retailers, as well as government services such as fire protection and law enforcement.
