Lt.-Colonel James Fannin drove them off with a well-coordinated charge using his mounted riflemen and artillery; this event is sometimes called the Battle of San Jacinto because so much blood was spilled - more than a thousand men were killed or wounded including five officers and two generals – six months after Mexico had declared war on America! Houston quickly built up an army which he used to capture Austin in February 1847 before marching it into town to burn it down (the first time Texans had ever done so!). With little opposition from American soldiers garrisoned there (save for some skirmishes), Congress soon passed the Allotment Act providing 640 acres (246 hectares) south of Buffalo Bayou for growth within US soil as part of what would come to be known as The Republic Of Texas! The townspeople responded enthusiastically to their new chance for success/promotion with feverish activity - they platted out patterns for streets and squares etc., painting houses red & white with blue stripes if they could afford such things & hiring architects who came up with plans for grandiose buildings like one seen today on Main Street just east of downtown: “This building shall be styled Government House …It will represent very forcibly all that exists hereabouts towards public usefulness” read one plan advertising property values back then! Within weeks their efforts bore fruit when Major John Murtagh arrived with troops reinforcements & started erecting government buildings like Fort Worth State Capitol today – both events helped spur development around Abilenes core even further! What followed was 35 years during which Abilene rapidly grew into one of Americas most important cities & has remained virtually unchanged since its founding despite occasional waves OF Urban Renewal (& Reclaiming), Economic Turmoil (& Recovery) galore!
