It would eventually become one of the largest grocery stores west of Wichita Falls before closing shop in 1996 due to online competition. A local school district (Tyler-Almont) was formed in 1916; today there are six schools within Tyler-Almont School District #2A: three elementary schools (Almont Elementary; Mount Pleasant Middle/High School; Roosevelt Junior High), one high school (Tyler Consolidated High School), and two alternative education programs (Brewster Alternative Education Center - Bergen County Campus; Open Learning Academy). In 1938, Elmer Gantry moved his printing press from Pasadena, Texas to Alton after purchasing it from Lillie Moulton Higgins Sr., widow of John Lillie Higgins Jr., founder of Lillie MoulTON Incorporated - America’s First Negro Telephone Company (later AT&T). Gantry produced many early issues of "The Texan" newspaper here before moving operations to Austin later that year. That same year saw also another major milestone for Alton when President Franklin D Roosevelt made an appearance at Hillsboro Baptist Church on October 20thpresumably stopping off briefly en route from Corpus Christi to Galveston Island before continuing on board USS Augusta (CA-5) for his historic trip around South America which culminated with his inauguration as 44th president on January 20thof 1933

Alton, Texas was founded in 1836 by a group of settlers from Illinois. The town was named for General James Alton, the first military governor of Indian Territory. At its peak, Alton had a population of around 100 people and was the largest city in Indian Territory. However, within a few years, the town's population plummeted due to violence and disease among the local Native Americans.
