Ricker who built a sawmill and pistol factory on what is now the corner of Second and Elm Streets. The factory produced pistols for frontier defense and hunting purposes. In 1881, Ricker sold his business to J.B. Silliphant who continued to produce pistols at his store until it burned down in 1907. In 1911, Alton voters passed an ordinance establishing a city police department under the direction of Mayor George Wittell Jr. The first officer appointed was Deputy Chief Harry Ladd with responsibility for traffic control, public morals and street cleaning. In 1916, Mayor Wittell reactivated the Fire Department which had been inactive since 1915 when it was merged into the Police Department In 1925, Mayor Wittell established a park system including three parks: Park Avenue (later renamed Elm Street), State Capitol Park (now Texas State Capitol) and City Hall Park as well as four open spaces: South Side Cemetery (1893), Goodall Park (1912), North Side Cemetery (1914) and White Settlement (1883). The Parks Board also developed regulations for use of these areas which remain in effect today Alton experienced some significant growth during World War II when thousands of men drafted into service moved into town from surrounding counties. Many businesses were damaged or destroyed by bombing raids but Alton emerged largely unscathed with just one structure lost –the Ricker Sawmill – which reopened after the war . As postwar reconstruction approached, Alton began to grow rapidly with new subdivisions being erected along Elm Street and other streetsides . In 1951 annexation by Dallas created new boundaries within Alton limits while making downtown property subject to city regulation; however most aspects of daily life remained unaffected A series of fires swept through downtown Alton in May 1953 starting near Third Street Bridge causing extensive damage including $3 million worth of property loss A large fire ripped through section 281 on November 6th 1954 consuming nearly allbuildings within two blocks adjacent to Trinity Episcopal Church destroying almost everything except safety rails on upper stories While still confined primarily to lower floors , this destructive fire completely destroyed five buildings outdoes any Built between 1872-1920 no less than eleven structures were demolished during that time frame

Alton, Texas was founded in 1836 by James Fenton. The town was named after Alton, Illinois, which at the time was a part of the United States. The first settlers arrived in 1836 and started to erect log cabins. In 1839, the town had a population of just 10 people and two businesses. By 1840, Alton had a population of 30 people and three businesses. In 1849, Alton became an official U.S. county seat and began to receive federal funding for infrastructure projects such as roads and schools. In 1860, the county seat moved from Alton to Fort Worth due to its importance in the war with Mexico. In 1870, John Wride erected the first cotton gin in Texas at Alton and started marketing cotton there. By 1880, there were 20 cotton gins operating in Texas alone; these mills produced over 100 million pounds of cotton each year. In 1889, John Wride donated land to build what is now State Highway 183 around his gin complex; this highway has become one of TX's most famous landmarks because it runs through many small towns throughout the state like Duncanville and Carthage (pictured).
