Alton, Texas is a city in Williamson County, Texas, United States. The population was 9,604 at the 2010 census. Alton is part of the Austin–Round Rock Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area around Alton was once a cattle country and its early settlers were farmers who raised hogs, chickens, and other stock. In 1881, Alton became the seat of Williamson County after it was created from parts of Travis and Bastrop counties. The town's first post office opened in 1881. The name "Alton" comes from an early settler's account of seeing a cottonwood tree with what looked like white ants crawling up its trunk. Ants had been found in the area before but this was the first time they had been observed climbing a tree! In 1887, three men named Ewing laid out a townsite on land that now includes much of downtown Alton. They named their settlement Fort Worth because they thought it would be helpful to find passage for wagon trains coming into Texas from Mexico City on their way to sell crops there. In 1895, school District No. 5 (later called Johnston School District) moved to Alton from nearby Duncanville after purchasing land east of town from John Denton Sr., founder and first president of Johnston Bank & Trust Company (now JPMorgan Chase). The school district served six adjacent communities: Duncanville-West Side; Green Oaks; Lady Bird Johnson; Shadycroft; and Park Hill-East Side (later renamed Pleasant Ridge). When Johnston School District disbanded in 1954 it merged with eight other school districts in Gregg County to form the current Williamson County School District #5A which serves all nine municipalities within Williamson County including Alton proper as well as unincorporated areas east of town along US 281/US 290 between US 183/US 190 and FM 620/FM 621

The history of Alton begins with Mormon settlers who arrived in 1881 following a wagon train trip from Nauvoo, Illinois. Over time, Alton grew into an important village withinJohnson County while also serving as an important center for trade and industry. In 1907, when Amarillo was created as a separate county, Alton became one of its several municipalities. It continued to serve as both a commercial and political center until 1975 when it merged with neighboring Lubbock to form the present day Amarillo metropolitan area. Today, Alton remains an important community within the Amarillo metropolitan area and is home to many businesses including Texaco/Mallory gas stations and Oldsmobile dealerships along with numerous churches including First Baptist Church which has been active in downtownAlTON since 1881
Alton is a city in the U.S. state of Texas, and the seat of Vernon County. The population was 3,521 at the 2010 census. Alton was founded by Scots-Irish settlers in 1836 and became a town in 1870. It received its own post office in 1875. In 1907, Alton became a city under the jurisdiction of Vernon County.
