Alton, Texas is a city in Medina County, Texas, United States. The population was 6,183 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. Alton was founded by Methodists in 1868 and named for Rev. John Alton of Boston, Massachusetts. The present day city was organized as a municipality on November 3, 1907. The first post office in Alton opened on December 2, 1868. In 1902 the town voted to secede from Medina County and become an independent municipality with its own government and mayor. On March 1, 1907 the city annexed part of McKinney County which had been reorganized as Medina County that year after Native American land delivery ceremonies were held there by Federal authorities seeking to prevent any further communal violence between Apache Indians and white settlers in the area during the Apache Wars (1867-1879). After annexation these new citizens quickly adopted their new name of "Alton" which they continued to use until 2000 when they reverted back to their original name of Medina County. According to the 2010 census, Alton has a total population of 6,183 residents including 459 households out of which 35% are Hispanic or Latino people making up 15% of all residents according to Census data while African Americans make up 9% only making up 0.4% overall percentage

Alton is a small town in Vernon County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. Alnton's ZIP code 77501 has been noted as having one of the highest concentrations of Hispanics in the United States. The early history of Alton can be traced back to 1836 when three Spanish families from Zacatecas founded a rancho (farm) on the west side of Tarrant Creek just north of present day Alton. In 1838, a post office was established at Alton and remained in operation until 1903. In 1870, A & I Railroad was built through Alton and by 1881 it had reached its apximate point about 6 miles east of town on Old Hwy 287 near what is now FM 19606. By 1886 A&I had merged with Gulf and Western Railway to become Gulf Atlantic Railway which served as the primary artery for commerce in Vernon County until 1945 when it became TXRD Line #1 within TXRD System#2 that serves both Dallas/Ft Worth and nearby Irving/Bedford Cities today while also providing passenger service into Richardson thru TXRD Line #2 currently known as North Central Expressway/I-35E bypassing much if not all downtown Richardson including many stores along Main Street including Sam's Club which relocated several blocks south just east along I-35E after Richardson lost its airport rights following what eventually became UT Arlington’s purchase of Lockheed Martin Aeronautics’ real estate holdings adjacent to John F Kennedy Presidential Library complex during that time period - http://www.kenneylibrarycenteronline.org/#!/intro/Texas_History_Online_-_An_Overview_-_of_the_Statehood_of_Texas_-_1836-present
Alton was founded in 1879 by John S. Alton and his wife, Emma. The town grew quickly due to the rise of oil production in the area. By 1903, Alton had a population of around 1,000 people. In 1907, the first post office was established in Alton. By 1912, Alton had a school and a Baptist church. In 1916, the first grocery store opened in Alton. In 1922, the first library was built in Alton. In 1925, the first doctorate degree awarded to a Texas resident was given to Dr. Abert Jarrell at Texas A&M University. The following year saw the opening of the world's second hospital in Alton- named Dallas County Hospital- which helped feed many of Texarkana's residents during World War II. From 1932 until its closure in 1981,Dallas County Hospital served as both an emergency room and general hospital for Texarkana and surrounding areas
