Amarillo, Texas is the oldest city in Amarillo County and the second-oldest in Texas. It was founded on November 3, 1849 by Oleander Price and James Bowie. The first post office was established in Amarillo on December 1, 1851. The town grew rapidly during the 1850s due to its location at the crossroads of two wagon routes and its access to natural resources such as oil and silver. In 1861, Amarillo became a county seat after it was chosen over Lubbock by a vote of residents. By 1870, the population had reached 10,000 and by 1898 it had grown to 25,000. The railroad arrived in Amarillo in 1907 and helped fuel the growth of the city until it went out of business in 1930.
