Andrews, Texas is a small town in the Bexar County area of Texas. The population was 3,878 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Bexar County. Andrews was founded in 1836 by John Andrews and his wife Catharine (Fletcher) Andrews. The name "Andrews" comes from an old Scots family name which means "thorny oak." In 1839, John's father-in-law, James Hennepin, built a cabin on what is now known as Pecan Street in present-day Andrews. James Hennepin was one of the original settlers in what would become Baylor County and served as its first sheriff from 1840 to 1845. In 1850, Andrew's mother-in-law Sarah Miller moved to Andrews from Wichita Falls and started a school there for girls. A year later, she added a second school building on Elm Street which still stands today. In 1861, Andrew married Lula Clements and they began farming land near their home on Cottonwood Drive. They also bought some property east of town where they established the city limits that same year. The city of Andrews began as an agricultural community with several small stores and homes clustered around Elm Street between 1860 and 1870. By 1880, however, it had grown sufficiently to support a public market place (now downtown), two churches (the first being dedicated in 1865), three schools (the first opened in 1872), two hospitals (1892 & 1896), four businesses including two banks (!), six residences including five homes for military officers stationed at Fort Sam Houston during World War II (!), twenty three plazas or streets totaling over one hundred acres (. . .)and more than 1/2 million people have walked or ridden through its boundaries since then!
