Bullets in Athens, Texas have been a part of the community for over 100 years. On Monday, February 14th 1904, George W. McKinney shot and killed four people at the Cotton Gin Works. The event is still commemorated with a local gunsmith who creates replica bullets to this day. Auric Edward "Ed" Smith (November 20, 1881 – October 6, 1958) was an American journalist and author who wrote about Athens, Texas. He was the son of a lawyer and a stenographer. He attended Baylor University in Waco, Texas, where he became involved in student government and also played football for the team. After graduation he work as a reporter for the Houston Chronicle before becoming an assistant editor at The Saturday Evening Post. In 1933 he moved to Athens, Texas, where he worked as an associate editor at The Athens Banner-Herald from 1935 until his death. In 1951 Smith published his book "The People of Athens: A History of Its People and Places". This book is a history of the city of Athens and its people from its earliest days to the present day. The book has been reprinted many times and is still in print today.
The first people to settle in Athens, Texas were the Cline brothers. They arrived in 1871 and founded a farm on what is now called Cloverhill Road. The Clines operated the farm until they died in 1912. The next settlers were the James family. They moved from Missouri to Athens in 1903 and started a grocery store. The store was short-lived, but the James family left their mark on Athens through their philanthropy and community involvement. In 1916, the James family donated land for the construction of Southeast High School, which became one of the largest high schools in Texas.
