After being closed by law enforcement officers several times during prohibition months due to disorder caused by drinkers or gamblers running amok inside markets (infuriating many residents), town officials decided to start selling liquor only during daytime hours instead so that auctions could take place without fear of disorder or damage to property values from drunken men playing cards or poker outside booths indoors! This change led to increased business for merchants while decreasing sales during prohibition days because customers knew they couldn't buy anything without buying alcohol! In 1933 Athens became one of forty townships statewide designated as "dry" under State Act 5244 which defined marriage as between one man and one woman only and prohibited gambling except at licensed racetracks where admission was free for all spectators!
