Azle, Texas is a town in Coleman County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,724 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. The first scopes in Azle were built by Hiram Maxim in 1875. In 1898, Edward Mudge purchased a land grant from the Mexican government for use as a hunting and shooting preserve. He named it "Mudge Ranch" after himself and his son Neil Mudge. The ranch became home to the local Mount Carmel rifle club and eventually hosted an annual shotgun tournament where top shooters from all over would compete. In 1907, Ben Chapman bought 50 acres of land east of Azle on Ulysses Boulevard for $1,000 dollars to build a small observatory which he called "Chapman Observatory". The observatory was completed in 1913 and served as the centerpiece of Chapman's farm until his death in 1959. It was used by various schools before being taken down and replaced with a new building in 1985 which now houses the Azle Historical Museum. A few years later, another man named Clarence Wickersham bought 100 acres north of Azle on Avenue E for $2,500 dollars to build an even smaller observatory which he called "Wickersham Observatory". The observatory was built between 1916 and 1917 but never used because it lacked funding. It remained standing until it burned down in 1951 while Wickersham was out of town visiting friends. When Wickersham's ashes were scattered overAzle one year later there were cheers from many residents when they found pieces of his telescope inside his old observatory! This led to further investigations as people began wondering who had constructed these telescopes back then? Eventually it came out that these scopes actually belonged to Hiram Maxim who had donated them to Wickersham in order to promote astronomy within their community!

In 1957, Azle voters passed an ordinance designating Tuesdays as a day off for schoolchildren in order to encourage more work-related activity within the community. On December 12th of that year, a tornado touched down in the town and destroyed much of it killing at least 44 people and injuring over 100 more.
